The Heart #01: Unrelenting Guts

January 22, 2013 by AJ Briones

A few days ago, I posted on my Twitter and blog that I will be working on a blog The Heart - Unrelenting Gutsabout the Heart.  The whole objective of it is to present to my readers a different heart. A heart directed to success and joy. I intent to do that by going through for a number of blogs certain points I got from a cartoon I enjoyed watching. Yes, I said cartoon, but please do not feel like it would be something shallow. Starting with this, the things that will be discussed will be helpful for some and can also be a reminder for all of us of what should our hearts should possess and exhibit.

Unrelenting Guts

To be totally honest with you, the wordings used for this was quite fascinating for me. The truth is that these two words are at often times heard by me but when I think of it, their meanings are so vague in my mind. With this reality I consulted man’s modern friend when looking for answers to what things are. In the olden days, that was the dictionary and at our time it’s Mr. Google.

I started by parting the two words and tried to study each word individually. I started out by typing on the space of Google search the words “Define: Unrelenting” and pressed enter.  It had about 1,350,000 results and two fascinating definitions popped on my laptops screen:

  1. Not yielding in strength, severity.
  2. (of a person or their behavior) Not giving way to kindness or compassion.

Fascinating, don’t you think so? As a word or a value, it spoke of something so powerful but as a value and something that I don’t consider bad. In some sort of way close to the words magnitude and severity but when view into an image of a person, it shows hardness; but what I saw that was common with the two is this: Continuous Direction in spite of any circumstance that may arise; good or bad.

Putting that aside and looking at the other word. I typed on my Google screen the words “Define: Guts” and pressed enter. It presented one meaning as a noun and it was simply defined as the stomach or belly. I actually had an idea of the word but for a long time it referred to intestines. Probably, that was the reason why I was perplexed when I was younger of the thought of why they called a character of the old Japanese computer game Megaman by the name of Gutsman. He didn’t look like intestines to me. The character was big and bulky and presented a masculine robot. Viewing the correct meaning for it made me understand what it meant; Guts. If you would translate the word Stomach to Filipino you would probably get the word Sikmura.

There was this Filipino phrase, “Kaya mo pa ba skimurain?” If you would translate that to English that would most likely mean “can you handle it?” Those words actually popped the bubble and made me understand what the words Unrelenting Guts really meant.

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up; Galatians 6:9.  Unrelenting Guts refer to one word and that is Perseverance. Perseverance is something so important and requires continuity. Perseverance would not be perseverance without that factor. The thing is, in the face of trials we all face fight-or-flight. When all things go well, it is so easy to live life and do what we think and believe is good but when hard times come what do we do? Yes, we fight on but what if after fighting on we end up failing again? Do we then give up? Do we then raise the white flag and be slaves of the situation? Many have done that and that is why we must remember to have Unrelenting Guts. In the face of defeat, stand. In the face of never-ending disappointments, go on. When everyone says you can’t go any further, sprint and never look back. In the face of uncertainty if we can have even just one win, continue of moving forward. Success is this, fighting and fighting to reach a goal. In the face of defeat, smile. In the face of mockery, believe. Keep the fire within you burning and never let it get snuffed out.

Unrelenting Guts is so important in our infinite battle against sin. We can never escape temptation and victory does not warrant that we are already invulnerable. When we fall down, never stay down and say that you we or I’m hopeless. Say, I know my wrongs and I repent of it but I will keep on running the race. Thinking of that reminded me of my favorite verse in the Bible found on 2nd Timothy 4:7 and it says this: I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

Doesn’t that sound rewarding at the end of it all? Let’s all keep and plant in our hearts UNRELENTING GUTS.
